Fostering Whole Body Well-Being: Addressing Multi-dimensional Challenges in Transplant Recipients

Abstract: Solid-organ transplantation offers a renewed hope to patients grappling with life-threatening conditions. However, beyond the surgical success lies innumerable challenges that impact the holistic well-being of transplant recipients.

The post-transplant period is characterized by substantial adaptation and adjustment, wherein recipients navigate through a myriad of physical, psychological, and social transformations. Central to this experience are issues of body image, wherein changes such as hair loss, surgical scars, and weight fluctuations can deeply influence self-perception and identity. Furthermore, the resumption of sexual functioning post-transplantation often poses significant challenges, affecting intimacy, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Beyond the realm of physicality, transplant recipients encounter profound role changes and occupational adjustments as they seek to reintegrate into society. The shifting dynamics within familial and social spheres, coupled with the financial burdens of ongoing medical care, further compound the complexities of post-transplant life.

In recognition of these multifaceted challenges, this session will provide a comprehensive exploration of the holistic well-being of transplant patients and encourage meaningful dialogue about these often-overlooked aspects of post-transplant life. Further, it is important to acknowledge the diverse backgrounds of transplant patients to understand how intersecting identities and cultural nuances affect post-transplant well-being. By fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse dimensions of post-transplant experiences, we aim to empower CL psychiatrists with the knowledge and empathy necessary to provide effective, patient-centered, post-transplant care.

Dr. Filza Hussain will delve into the psychological difficulties experienced by transplant recipients due to changes in physical appearance. She will explore how these changes, such as hair loss and body scars, can profoundly impact self-esteem, body image, and overall quality of life. By addressing these sensitive issues with empathy and understanding, Dr. Hussain aims to equip healthcare professionals with the tools to provide comprehensive support to transplant recipients throughout their post-transplant journey.

Dr. Yelizaveta Sher will address sexual functioning and weight changes in transplant recipients. She will discuss how transplant journey can affect patient’s sexual functioning through changes in physical health, medication side effects, psychological symptomatology, and changes in relationships and roles.

Dr. Janelle Ruiz will examine the complex role changes experienced by transplant patients, including shifts in relationships, occupational dynamics, and financial stability and the impact of these changes on interpersonal dynamics within familial and social spheres. She will explore strategies for navigating role transitions and fostering resilience amidst the evolving landscape of post-transplant life. Dr. Ruiz will also discuss how racial, cultural, and socioeconomic factors play a role in disparities related to post-transplant well-being.

Dr. Kristin Kuntz will explore the intricate dimensions of identity formation and the unique challenges faced by transplant recipients in reclaiming their sense of self. She will shed light on the profound impact of limitations imposed by the transplant experience on daily activities, hobbies, and parenting roles.

Each speaker will have 15 minutes for presentation, leaving 15 minutes for audience question and answer section.
