Abstract: Delirium is easily among the most common conditions encountered by the consultation-liaison psychiatrist in acute care settings; however, despite the importance of delirium to C-L practice, updated Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) on delirium from a psychiatric perspective have long been lacking. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) last published CPG on delirium in 1999.

In this session, we will provide an interactive review of APA’s forthcoming CPG for the Prevention and Treatment of Delirium, whose publication is anticipated in late 2024/early 2025. Among the topics to be covered are guideline methodology, specific guideline statements along with the strength of evidence, and a discussion regarding the clinical implementation of each statement.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to describe the importance of using a valid and reliable instrument for delirium screening.
Participants will be able to discuss the limited role of antipsychotics in managing the neuropsychiatric features of delirium.
Participants will be able to identify key evaluations to perform, including medication review and pertinent treatment planning, at transitions of care.
