Artificial Intelligence and Its Potential Impact on C-L Training: Amplifying Innovation or Assailing Integrity? Sponsored by ACLP's Fellowship Education Subcommittee

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize C-L psychiatry education. The power of AI tools such as ChatGPT has generated both excitement and concern in the academic community. Potential benefits of AI include improving clinical reasoning skills by using iterative learning modules, enhancing scientific writing and research equity, and streamlining aspects of the fellowship application process and review. Possible downsides include the potential for increased plagiarism, the risk of spreading bias iteratively, and algorithmic interference with holistic admissions review. Given both the unlimited benefits that AI may hold for C-L education, as well as the magnitude of the adverse impact that it may impart, it is imperative that C-L psychiatry educators and fellows learn about and reflect on the directions that AI can take us.

In this session, the speakers will focus on AI as it relates to C-L psychiatry training and scholarship. Dr. Bradley will describe the literature on AI and medical education to date. Dr. Lee will discuss the ethical considerations surrounding AI and the assessment of trainees, as well as the potential for furthering both equity and bias when using AI in the educational sphere. Dr. Shah will present the ways that C-L fellows can use AI in their clinical and scholarly work. Finally, Dr. Siegel will explain the potential impact of AI on the C-L fellowship application process and the recruitment of fellows.

Participants will also break out into small groups to discuss their experiences with AI as educators and fellows, including dilemmas they have faced, as well as what they view as high-priority aspects of AI implementation at their institutions. They will then report out in a large group discussion, with a question-and-answer session at the end of the workshop.
