Ten Most Influential Papers in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry for the 2023-2024 Academic Year: Annotations from the Guidelines and Evidence Based Medicine Subcommittee

Abstract:

Background:


In the constantly evolving field of consultation-liaison (CL) psychiatry, staying up to date with the latest research and developments is crucial for providing the best possible care to patients. With a plethora of information available, it can be overwhelming to navigate the vast landscape of psychiatric literature. To help streamline this process, the ACLP Guidelines and Evidence Based Medicine Subcommittee will present the ten most influential papers from the 2023-2024 academic year that highlight groundbreaking research, innovative therapies, and insightful perspectives in the field of consultation-liaison psychiatry.



Methods:


Each quarter, subcommittee members identify articles most relevant in the field of CL psychiatry and provide annotations. Over the last 12 months, the annotations have been viewed nearly 4000 times by over 1200 users, both within ACLP and the greater psychiatric community. To determine the most impactful articles from the academic year, all subcommittee members will be invited to rate the annotated articles from the 2023-2024 academic year on clinical importance, based on previously published methods (Simpson et al, 2020, Simpson et al, 2021). This year, we will enhance the evaluation process by also implementing objective measures to determine the impact of articles. This includes utilizing journal impact scores and tracking citations to assess the reach and influence of the research. This systematic approach will ensure that impactful and groundbreaking articles are highlighted and recommended to mental health professionals, furthering the advancement of CL psychiatry.



Results:


During the presentation, each speaker will provide a thorough analysis of the research findings, methodologies, both weaknesses and strengths, and implications of the articles, highlighting their relevance to the practice of psychiatry. CL topics will include a range of subspecialties from addiction to neuropsychiatry, from psycho-nephrology to transplant.



Discussion:


The ACLP Guidelines and Evidence-Based Subcommittee plays a crucial role in evaluating and annotating articles in CL psychiatry. By examining the key takeaways and discussing the practical applications of the research, presenters will demonstrate how the findings can inform and enhance clinical practice.


Conclusion/Implications:


Through the discussion of the top ten papers in CL psychiatry during the 2023-2024 academic year, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how these articles contribute to the advancement of CL psychiatry and how they can be integrated into their own practice to improve patient care.
