Dr. Derek Pipolo earned his medical degree from the National University of Rosario – College of Medical Sciences, where he discovered his passion for neuroscience serving as a dissector and researcher for the Department of Anatomy. Following medical school, Dr. Pipolo embraced diverse medical roles, beginning as an emergency department physician, before venturing into neurosurgery residency at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Under the guidance of Dr. Alvaro Campero, MD, PhD, and Dr. Matias Baldoncini, MD, he additionally conducted extensive research in skull base neurosurgery and innovative endoscopic and microsurgical techniques.
Motivated by the profound impact of mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Pipolo made a pivotal career shift towards psychiatry, returning to the United States. Currently serving as a Research Associate in the Division of Medical Psychiatry under Dr. José Maldonado, MD, he actively contributes to clinical trials and research focusing on delirium. His work explores complementary methods and clinical screening tools for the early detection of this condition. Dr. Pipolo's future aspirations include pursuing a psychiatry residency, with a keen interest in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
