Dr. Badr Ratnakaran is the Division Chief of Geriatric Psychiatry, Geriatric psychiatrist at Carilion Clinic Center for Healthy Aging, and Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.He currently serves as the President of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia and the Chair of the American Psychiatric Association's Council for Geriatric Psychiatry. With over 17 years of experience in mental health, Dr. Ratnakaran worked as a clinician-educator in psychiatry in his home country, India. He moved to the USA to pursue further training in psychiatry and completed his second general psychiatry residency training and fellowship in geriatric psychiatry from Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
As a trainee in the USA, Dr. Ratnakaran has served as a PRITE fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, and the Vice-Chair of the APA Leadership fellowship. He is an awardee of the Honors Scholar Program of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), the Trainee Travel Award of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP), the Association of Academic Psychiatry’s (AAP) and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Aequitas Health Honor Society. At present, he serves as a member of the APA Council for Geriatric Psychiatry, the Maintenance of Certification Sub- Committee of the ACLP, and the Membership Committee and Master Educator Committee of AAP. Dr. Ratnakaran’s main areas of interest include Geriatric Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry, Climate Change and Mental Health, Academic Psychiatry, Physician Wellness, Cyber psychiatry, and Psychiatry in Arts and Media.
