Christian is an Assistant Professor and Clinician Educator in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and a Staff Psychiatrist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Department of Supportive Care since November 2019. He completed his Medical Doctorate in Neuroscience at Witten/Herdecke University in Germany. Christian holds a Master of Science in Palliative Care from King’s College London and a Master of Arts in Existential-Phenomenological Psychotherapy from Middlesex University, UK. He is currently completing a Doctorate in Psychanalysis (PsyaD) with the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis in the US. Christian is board certified in Psychosomatic Medicine, Medical Psychotherapy and Palliative Medicine in Germany and is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, as well as being on the board of directors of the Canadian Academy for Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry. He has specialist psychotherapy training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, gender, sex and relationship diversity psychotherapy, dialectical-behavioral therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder and Dignity Therapy for end-of-life psychotherapy. Christian has a long-standing focus on combining medicine and the humanities in his leadership philosophy. He was the co-founder and deputy medical chief of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Palliative Care at the University Hospital in Dusseldorf, Germany from 2009 to 2015. He has led research-funded national discourse projects on meaning-making and mortality in Germany and is co-founder of the ‘30thoughts’ discourse project series. He has also initiated and produced numerous national and international art and film projects focused on lived cancer care experiences.
