Dr. Sales graduated as a Medical Doctor with Magna cum laude honors from Universidade Federal do Ceará as part of a unique training program sponsored by Brazil’s federal government that allowed him to absorb a year of clinical training at the Universitätsklinikum Aachen, Germany. Following this, he completed his Master’s in Science at Universidade Federal do Ceará, where he developed an innovative animal model of catatonia after examining the distinct effects of electromagnetic stimulation over the spinal cord of animals pre-treated with levodopa or haloperidol.
After practicing for about two years as an emergency room and intensive care doctor in Brazil, Dr. Sales pursued his passion for psychiatry and joined his residency program at the SUNY Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, NY, where he graduated as a chief resident. After this, he furthered his clinical expertise as a fellow in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Brown University.
Before joining Alabama Psychiatry, Dr. Sales was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and leads national and international groups dedicated to providing equitable care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
