Drew Kiraly received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 2013. Following medical school Drew began residency training at the Icahn School of Medicine Psychiatry residency program on the physician-scientist track. During residency he was a two-year chief resident, was awarded and Outstanding Resident Award from the National Institutes of Mental Health, received the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology memorial travel award, and many other accolades. During this time he was named as a Leon Levy Fellow in Neuroscience as well as a Seaver Family Foundation fellow in autism research.
Upon graduation from residency Drew was promoted to Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & Neuroscience as well as an Attending Physician in the Mount Sinai Hospital. Following five successful years on faculty at Mount Sinai, Drew was recruited to Wake Forest University School of Medicine where he is currently an Associate Professor of Translational Neuroscience and Psychiatry.
As the principal investigator of the Laboratory of Translational Psychiatry Drew oversees myriad projects examining neuroimmune and gut-brain interactions in models of psychiatric disease. His lab has been consistently funded by the National Institutes on Drug Abuse since its inception including awards of the prestigious Avenir Award for cutting edge epigenetics work, and the Cutting-Edge Basic Research Award (CEBRA) prize. In addition to this translational work, Drew is also co and principal investigator on multiple clinical research projects and works as an attending physician in the psychiatry outpatient clinic and at Baptist Medical Center.
