Psychiatry Resident
Northwell Health
Glen Oaks, New York
Sarah Martell, MD is a psychiatry resident at Northwell Health / Zucker Hillside Hospital with an interest in child psychiatry. She is originally from the Bay Area of California and moved to the East Coast for college. She studied Neuroscience at Amherst College and graduated with a magna cum laude honors thesis exploring the use of GLP1 inhibitors for treatment of binge eating disorder. After college, she worked as a DBT counselor and educator at a residential program for adolescent women at McLean Hospital in Boston for 3 years before moving to NYC to attend NYU Grossman for medical school. She is now a third year psychiatry resident at Zucker Hillside Hospital and is planning to apply for Child and Adolescent fellowships in the coming year. She is interested in the disconnects that often occur between patients and providers when providers fail to address or attend to the conversations about health issues occurring on social media and the lay press. She is involved in several projects with the aim of helping patients and their providers to close this gap. Her background in DBT has also helped to shape her interests in the treatment of personality disorders. She believes that DBT skills should be taught in schools as a crucial part of "preventive mental health care."
