UTHealth Houston
Houston, Texas
Dr. Olivia Zhao received her undergraduate education at Duke University with dual degrees in biology and global health. She then pursued her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). Currently, she is a third-year psychiatry resident physician in the Research Track at UTHealth Houston. Her career interests are biopsychosocial determinants of mental health, epigenetics of mood disorders, and consult-liaison psychiatry.
Dr. Zhao has combined her passion for medical education, advocacy, and cultivating community by developing one of the first medical school curricula in the nation on physician’s roles in firearm safety and violence prevention. This work was adapted into resident education at her institution and nationally recognized by the American Medical Association. Dr. Zhao’s dedication to her community is exemplified by her yearlong project through the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship to improve the quality of life of the visually-impaired population in the Greater Houston area through one-on-one technology workshops. Furthermore, Dr. Zhao’s ongoing devotion to research has resulted in fourteen peer-reviewed manuscript publications and twenty-seven poster and oral presentations in multiple disciplines at both national and regional conferences, all of which contribute in her pursuit to become an academic psychiatrist.
