Paul C. Amrhein; NIA Postdoctoral Fellow (1987, Psychology), Washington University in St. Louis; PhD (1987, Psychology), MS (1982, Psychology), MA (1981, Linguistics), BS (1978, Psychology/Linguistics), University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ). I am also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Medical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University (NYC). I am an experimental psycholinguist: I conduct research on language use in natural contexts (e.g., conversations, therapeutic interviews). Current NIH (NIDA, NIAAA) funded studies concern the language of behavioral change arising during psychotherapy--especially motivational interviewing. The focus is on the nature of patient "change talk" and moderators (e.g., behavioral treatment fidelity, patient neurocognitive function) that enable/limit its mediating role in determining clinical outcomes.
