Martin Maxwell is a third-year medical student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. A Colorado native, he attended Colorado State University for both his undergraduate and master’s degrees, both in social work. Prior to attending medical school, he worked in the mental health field for nearly 10 years, initially in program development at Colorado State University, creating mindfulness-based stress management and suicide prevention programming. Eventually transitioning to the University of Colorado Health System, he helped co-create, pilot, and coordinate a Dialectical Behavior Therapy-based intensive outpatient program for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder and other severe mental health disorders. His interest in stress-reduction, whole-person health, and mindfulness-based interventions began in graduate school, studying the effects of such programming on the perceived stress and wellbeing of university students. He plans to continue pursuing these passions as he pursues a residency in psychiatry, with hopes of completing an additional fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry, where he can learn new ways to integrate medical and mental health as he furthers his career.
