Dr. Edwards grew up in Central Illinois and earned a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. During her undergraduate studies, she assisted with research examining Stroop effect analysis to identify additional cognitive and emotional risk factors contributing to the development of anxiety and depression as part of the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience of Psychopathology (CANOPY) laboratory, led by Dr. Wendy Heller. She completed her medical doctorate at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, where she participated in the Rural Student Physician Program and received additional training in working with underserved populations. During this time, she was involved in investigating the prevalence of medication-assisted treatment and behavioral counseling services available to peripartum women with substance use disorder in rural communities of mid-central Illinois.
Dr. Edwards completed her psychiatry residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, where she served as chief resident physician for 2023-2024. She has since joined the UICOM Peoria Psychiatry Department as an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry. Her professional interests include collaborative medical education in psychiatry, integrated psychiatric care, and psychotherapy.
