Medical Student
The University of Texas at Austin - Dell Medical School
Evelyn Syau is a dual-degree medical student at the University of Texas at Austin. Currently, she is earning both her M.D. at Dell Medical School and her M.A. in Design focused on Health at UT Austin’s School of Design and Creative Technologies. Evelyn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences from Rice University in Houston, TX, as well as a Master of Public Health degree from the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston.
Alongside her public health background and interest in medicine, Evelyn has also explored how design and illustration can be applied to medicine and the promotion of health and wellbeing. Past notable experiences involve projects at Texas Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Nutrition Research Center in Houston, where she designed graphics and patient education modules on topics ranging from the risks of premature delivery to childhood obesity prevention. Her recent research engagements include the following: 1) examining strategies for firearm injury prevention in the pediatric population, 2) understanding the psychosocial barriers to participation in advance care planning, and 3) increasing access to services that promote the social and mental wellbeing of older adults.
After medical school, Evelyn plans to pursue a career in psychiatry, with specific interests in both child/adolescent psychiatry and reproductive psychiatry. Having explored various avenues of health promotion and care delivery, Evelyn is especially drawn to the role service design can play in improving patient outcomes and experiences, particularly in the mental health space.
